PPM seems to ignore repository

My ppm preferences have configured only one repository. It is

and it is enabled. However, PPM seems not to access this repository on my Windows 7 system.

On my first attempt, I forgot to set the HTTP_PROXY environment variable, so, not surprisingly, PPM issued an error message.

I terminated ppm, and set HTTP_PROXY to the value I'm using for Firefox (automatic proxy configuration, in my case http://proxyconf/). After starting ppm, no error message, but it immediately said "synchronizing database ... done", although it shows only 48 packages (those which happened to be installed), even though "show all packages" is selected.

Next, I tried manual proxy configuration. I used the Proxy which, for instance, my Opera browser successfully uses to connect to the internet. With this proxy, I again get error 500.

Any suggestion what I could use next?

Sometimes people don't substitute the correct values for the variables in the example strings.

Certain characters in a password are known to affect PPM. Normal letters and numbers will be fine, but punctuation signs and symbols (like #) will cause parsing errors.
