Komodo 5, coming soon ( Alpha builds, that is )

Posted by jeffg on 2008-08-20 12:07
OS: All / Any

Here's a quick screenshot of the build that will likely become Komodo 5 Alpha 1 ( on OS X ). Some things to note:

  • The nice unified / native 'Leopard' look on OS X
  • The previous point implies correctly that we are now running on the Firefox 3 codebase.
  • Those are two windows; Komodo now can do multiple top-level windows.

Looking swish :)

Any idea of a potential release date (or window)?

Probably this fall sometime, still a little too early to tell. All we've done so fasr is the multi-window work and the port to Gecko 1.9.0 / Firefox 3.0. We still have to add some features. =)

How does the multiple windows work? Can you drag and drop tabs between them? Could one window show a live preview that's updated when I save a file in the other window?

Lots of possibilities here. :-)

Currently multi-window support is quite primitive; we spent a lot of time patching code to get it working at all, but have yet to add any multi-window-specific features. That means that currently:

  • dragging tabs from one window to another does not work ( but it's a cool
    idea! )
  • editing the same file in multiple windows *does* update the code in all
windows, just the same as if you were editing the file split into tab
    groups.

I've attached a couple of screenshots of the current multi-window specific features so far:

We have some pretty decent builds right now, so you should see an alpha release maybe tomorrow or early next week.

We just approved the current builds for release, look for emails and blog posts pointing to the appropriate places tomorrow.

Just a quick sanity check ... can I install this alongside my existing (and wonderfully stable) 4.4.1?

Windows XP Pro / W2k3.

I'm very keen to try out the multi-window support. I'm currently working on 3 largish projects, and often end up with 80+ files open. Makes for much thrashing around and confusion, especially as there are a lot of files called the same thing in more than one project. So I'm more than happy to put in some testing effort to help it along ...

Komodo 5 will install and run beside Komodo 4, and not interfere with it. please try it out, but please don't expect it to be worthy of full-time use yet, it's still rough around the edges!
