There are a lot of background tasks that occur in Komodo. If this is the first time startup of Komodo, then it is likely that Komodo is scanning for code files to add to it's code intelligence database. There is normally a statusbar message that occurs to indicate this is what is happening.
If your using a Komodo project, ensure the project directory (where the project kpf file is saved) is not your home directory, as Komodo will try to scan everything under the project base directory. Also, try closing the Komodo project and restart to see if that makes any difference.
Well, this went on for a few hours so I don't think it was scanning. I have just restarted it and it's saying it is scanning. I'll leave it alone for a bit and see if it continues :)
