PPM 4 enhancement requests

Here are some enhancements I would like to see:

1. Option to continue to use PPM from the command line as in version 3 rather than only for specific sub-commands

2. Option to issue sub-commands manually (rather than point and click) in the GUI

3. Be able to choose which repository to download a package from

4. Be able to highlight more than one package at a time in the GUI

The GUI is quite nice, but I think a little more flexibility for the end user such as those suggested above would be good too.

Thanks for your comments, I have captured them in this bug:

There is already a little helper script distributed with ActivePerl called 'ppm-shell' that should give you most of the experience of ppm3 command line shell. Hopefully this addresses your item number 1. All it really does it save you from typing 'ppm' in front of every command you give.

I'd like to see these features:

  1. Use language modules in the GUI (ie: not hardcoded texts). So that one can create/install localized language packages and use the PPM4 GUI in his/her own language. Lang packs will probably be using UTF8 encoding...
  2. Database Synchronization takes a long time with slow connections (I have a 256K cable connection). It'll be nice to disable (or somehow fix) this by default, since I don't install the whole PPM repository.
  3. Database Synchronization and installing modules freezes the GUI. maybe it needs a use threads; :) I've terminated the GUI a few times and then tried ppm-shell to see what's going on :p

And thanks for this great perl distribution and additional software :)
