Eclipse/Open Komodo

On the Activestate website, Open Komodo is described as:

"The Open Komodo Project, based on the award-winning Komodo IDE, is a new initiative by ActiveState to create an open source platform for building developer environments. The Open Komodo Project will create Firefox-integrated web developer tools that support the open web."

On the Eclipse website, Eclipse is described as:

"Eclipse is an open source community whose projects are focused on building an open development platform comprised of extensible frameworks, tools and runtimes for building, deploying and managing software across the lifecycle."

What I see in both descriptions is, that they are open source platforms for buiding some kind of software.

I haven't been using Eclipse seriously in the past, but I'm a longtime Komodo user using it for all kinds of script programming (PHP, Tcl, SQL, Perl).
From my current view I can't really tell what might be the differences between both of them.

Hermann

Based on those descriptions, there doesn't seem to be much difference. One major difference in my mind is the technology base that each uses. Eclipse started as a Java IDE and has since branched out to other things. I think originally a key part of its success in the Java community was that it written in Java, which allowed a low barrier for entry for any of the Java developers using it to actually contribute to it.

Likewise, Open Komodo is written based on Firefox and using JavaScript, XML and Python. Most web developers will have some familiarity with these technologies, and some may have already done Firefox extension development. We feel there will again be a low barrier for entry for Komodo users to become Komodo contributors.

Beyond that, I personally see a lot of 'style' differences between Eclipse in Komodo in how they are designed and their usability. It depends very much on your own tastes which one you might prefer.

IBM sponsorship :).

Eclipse is too much bloatware for me, and practically everybody I have talked to agrees. You can see this very easily by trying to write/compile/run a single java file in Eclipse, I can hammer one out in PSPad (or Komodo) much, much faster.

The RPG programmers here even stick to old school Access iSeries over the Eclipse-based GUI application for the AS/400, its name escapes me atm.

This is an old thread, and around 2007-2008, I had the same experience with Eclipse being bloated.

But as of 2009-Jul, starting up Komodo (no extra plugins) with nothing but the Start Page takes 8 seconds on my laptop. Note that I've collapsed the "What's New" section in the start page to avoid the network delay.

Starting up Eclipse (the "IDE for Java Developers" version) with a BONITA project and a remote project loaded (which requires the RSE plugin), takes 6.5 seconds.

Both tests done after restarting each IDE a number of times to prime the OS cache.

On the other hand, Komodo takes up less RAM than Eclipse, and much less virtual memory.

I put up a comparison of Eclipse vs. Komodo IDE at http://wiki.dandascalescu.com/reviews/software/komodo_vs_eclipse
