debugger fails to start

On one of the three machines I use for perl, I have suddenly begun to get this response---

perl -d
&Config::AUTOLOAD failed on Config::launcher at C:/Perl/lib/ line 72.
Compilation failed in require.
at line 0
main::BEGIN() called at C:/Perl/lib/ line 0
eval {...} called at C:/Perl/lib/ line 0
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted.
at line 0

I reloaded perl (thinking that maybe it had become corrupted--grasping at straws) with no change in behavior. I've seen other references to this problem while boring around on the web but no solutions/hints were posted. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Update. ActiveState support's advice was to uninstall, trash the perl folder, and reinstall--and everything seems back to normal. The step I missed was trashing the perl folder.
