Consistency - Hmm...

OS: All / Any

Please let me begin by stating that I honestly feel fortunate to have learned of Komodo Edit when I did. I believe it is among the best PHP IDE's, if not the best HTML, JavaScript, CSS, and PHP Web-Application Integrated Development Environment which I personally have used. So, there's no love loss here as far as the product goes.

The reason I've titled the post "Consistency" (with a question mark) is due to my experience with the use of the term Open Komoodo vs Komodo Edit, and in particular, the redundant linkage (at time of writing) of the Open Komodo [Project], ActiveState Community, and Komodo Edit web sites, including the Download area.

I realize that it has been conspicuously announced to the users of this particular community, and the aforementioned, related sites, that we are to understand it's yet in a beta stage of development, and begging the pardon of the ActiveState site developers, I too can empathize with a circumstance of too little man-power (i.e. oneself, in my case) struggling to meet the deadlines for up-to-date content-- the constant pressure to provide something meaningful for the readers; the community contributors (who are existing Komodo IDE; K.Edit; ActivePython users etc., and in my understanding of the Open Komodo initiative itself, the current substantive contributors [such as users who submit XUL extensions for K.Edit] who make up the very essence of Open Komodo).

I should also remark upon the outstanding workmanship of this community. It's refreshing, as a programmer oneself, to interact with a quality Web Application, such as is in place here. I'm no expert on Content Management Systems per se, but I'm guessing-- for example-- that this forum exists because of the expertly-deployed work of an [ActiveState site] development team (or person), vs. the pre-fab, skinned apps which make up so many OEM site communities. However, it is in my regard for the integrity, and spirit of such design that I find myself frustrated with certain key aspects of 'Open Komodo'.

For example: when I first became hooked to this idea of Open Komodo, and I setup a user account to participate in this forum, I did not expect to find, several weeks later, that there is apprently an entirely different web related to 'Open Komodo' where one might also exercise his or her affinity for the project. It's confusing.

It's exciting to read about ActiveState's involvement with Mozilla as well. Congratulations! In the meantime, as the wanting-to-be dedicated users try to 'get involved' here at the 'public face' of ActiveState, I'm afraid there may be users who have returned for support, to contribute, or ortherwise interact, who might turn around, unfortunately, less enthused. The band doesn't go on tour to back the first single to the hot new album with last-year's van, low-on oil, and a flat tire. (well, okay-- my band did, but that could be why i'm sitting here writing code presently as well. hee hee... not that code is a bad thing, but you get the idea, i hope)

;-)

rock on. it's exciting to be involved at the user level. and it's always great to have tickets to the floor too!

Hi Stanley,

I agree, the current slate of Komodo-related websites is a tad complicated. As time has gone by since the launch of the Open Komodo project site and the development of Komodo Edit 4.3 on that source tree, we've also pondered changing the web properties around a bit to make things a bit clearer for users. We hope to dig into that work in the next few months.

Hi, Mr. Jeff.

Thanks for your reply.

Congratulations! The ActiveState / Open Komodo sites (i.e. openkomodo.com and community.activestate.com) appear more cohesive in design now. I'm sure it was completely coincidental to my own comments above, but it's still reassuring to see this sort of over-night improvement. awesome!
BTW: I should have made it clear that part of my concern was in regard to the URL's associated with the user seeking help from within the IDE itself. (Sure, I can critique your site cohesion, but never mind my own state of being all-over-the-place with this topic! thanks for not giving up on me there...)

In 4.3.1, the user is directed from the desktop IDE (in K.E.) to http://www.openkomodo.com/ . Not sure if that's a recent change from a [former ?] target of community.activestate.com , or whether I had simply navigated myself to the latter before finally registering to participate here-- or even whether this, community.activestate.com , is the only forum where any user can actually participate; post his or her support topic inquiry.

NIH vs. GTD

After posting this topic, I went on to read some other posts-- eventually to learn that you've been using Drupal, which i find impressive on multiple levels.
1.) I feel a bit foolish for what I said earlier (re: not pre-fab), but I'm not sure if it really matters (re: integrity of design) in terms of the end usability, and affect. I suppose there's no need for the Engineer to "reinvent the wheel" when his ability to pilot that cart is not only adequate, but skillful to a degree that his passengers are none the wiser.
2.) Yet to use it in production, my faith in Drupal as a legitimate solution has been reinforced. I question, however, whether I will find sufficient gratification in the deployment of that "wheel", or am I doomed to shoot myself in the foot, misguided by the demons of my own N.I.H. syndrome?

OpenKomodo.com Blog

In terms of user-contribution to public literature of Open Komodo-- anything from general commentary (designed to spark interest in Open Komodo), to Camstasia-Studio-esque tutorials for users' improved mastery of the software-- for me, it would be exciting to monitor an XML feed for new, user-submissions to the blog text I see in the 'Start' page of the IDE. Is this on the agenda for OpenKomodo.com ? If so, how might one get involved in contributing to that content (as it would seem such content would require the approval of an Editor/ Moderator)?

Rock on!

I personally would never write a web application from scratch given great tools for helping you out that exist now such as ( in the PHP community ) Drupal, Cake, Symfony, Zend Framework, and probably loads I'm forgetting. This site would simply not exist if I hadn't been able to get 90% of the functionality we needed from Drupal.

The only gotcha I can see is that ( in Drupal's case, and others I am sure ) you have to learn to think in Drupal before becoming truly productive. This is where the other ( and IMO most important ) advantage of Drupal comes into play - the Drupal community. There is an avalanche of information, opinions, tutorials, documentation and personalities involved.

As far as the RSS feed in the Start Page, it is our intention to make this more of a 'Planet Komodo' feed soon. Thanks for the vote in that direction though.

cheers, Jeff
