Komodo IDE Trial won't start

Question:

When I start Komodo IDE 4.0.0 for the first time, I get a dialog that says 'Your license is incompatible with this version of Komodo', and an option to buy or upgrade. What is going on?

Answer:

We have discovered a problem affecting some Trial users of Komodo 4.0.0 where they will not be able to start a 21-day trial on the first start of Komodo. This is now fixed in Komodo 4.0.1:

ftp://ftp.activestate.com/Komodo/Windows/4.0/Komodo-IDE-4.0.1-274919.msi

I downloaded a trial at work on MacBook Pro and it ran fine several times.

Took the laptop home and it refused to run same message as above, I use wireless at home wired at work in case that matters (MAC addresses are often used for licensing).

At home I removed Komodo from Applications and reinstalled, now it works again. In my fumbling with the trial invitation email I went to the download page but had already downloaded before the email came so there are 2 licenses under MyDownloads which was not my intent.

I am working fine now, just letting you know what was observed.

A day later the problem came back.

Does your hostname or user account change at work vs. at home? This may be confusing the licensing system.

The hostname and user account remain the same and the user file store is on the local disk to answer Todd's quetion. I haven't been at the office the last couple of days (Vancouver PHP conference) so will try when I get in tomorrow.

If I were to put the application in the trash and install again from the dmg file without downloading, it would run. It seems to be after the laptop sleeps and I try and run it again in a few hours but that would be a guess on the laptop sleep.

Should I redownload, I think I actually downloaded form the MyDownloads area before there was a key on the page, not sure if that makes a difference as in the key is encoded intot he install image somehow. I don't want to know the answer since that would violate possible secrets on the trial licensing scheme, just throwing this out there as an idea of what possibly could be causing this. I can't say for sure on download before a key was visible 100% because this area of the site was new and I wasn't paying that much attention to the page content.

I did try out the 3.5.3 trial last December but being over the holidays I didn't get much stick time on it and since 4.0.1 is the new release figured it would be better to give it a proper test this time.

Thanks for the quick response.

It could also be due to domain name login, where the user data dir is placed in another server/drive?

The IDE starts normally when back at work so it seems to be an issue when moving to a different location which also switches networks. At work I use a wired LAN and turn off wireless to avoid interference, at home I use the wireless port.

The 4.0.2 install works ok in my situation.

Thank you...

Komodo ide 4.0
A new dynamic ...

Your installed license is not compatible with this version of komodo. What would you like to do?
optionbox ...

???

Which exact version of Komodo are you using? The current version is 4.0.2.

I downloaded the trial today, filename Komodo-IDE-4.2.1-283000-macosx-x86.dmg

I get the "license not compatible" problem.

Big question though is, I work in an office most of the time but from home a few times/month. If we buy a license for my laptop, is it only going to work on the office network?

The intro screencast is pretty compelling but these licensing issues make me pretty uneasy.

EDIT: I deleted Komodo and d/led it again from the My Downloads page and re-installed and this time got an option to start a 21 day trial.

The problems with the trial license stems from the fact that the generated trial license contains specific information about the hostname, so if the hostname changes (like when you move from a vpn-setting to a lan-setting) the trial license will no longer work for the new hostname (it still works when using the original hostname, i.e. when you go back to the office network).

These problems are *only* a problem for the trial license. The purchased IDE license uses a different license-checking mechansim, one that does not involve the hostname.

Unfortunately there are still some hostname dependencies in both the trial and the ide version in that the Komodo profile does use the hostname to determine where to store some data (such as the code intelligence data, extensions). See the following bug for references:

I was told to login to activestate and extend my trial - this would reset the hostname the trial is tied to.

Also, my ~/Library/Application\ Support/ActiveState/ was owned by root.

Resetting ownership to be owned by my user enabled the trial licence to work.

Martin.
